Programming

The Quilting Party offers lots of opportunities to engage with the art of quilting and with each other. These opportunities are offered many ways, including: monthly meetings; in-person quilting bees; first friday food & friends; and, seasonal retreats & workshops.

Monthly Meetings

We meet on the first Tuesday of every month, both in person and also through Zoom.

Note: There will be no regular meeting in August 2025. See details below. Not all monthly meetings will be offered in a hybrid format.

January 7 Leah Day video on Free Motion Quilting **

February 4 "Beauty of the Southwest" with J. Michelle Watts

March 4 Balance for Life, Jan Notter | Learn balance exercises to keep us moving *

April 1 Fork Mtn Quilting/ Buyers' Spree - Melissa and Todd Cassell of Fork Mtn Quilting in Rocky Mount will be bringing the latest fabric catalogues and putting TQP members in the role of buyers for the store. *

May 6 Sew Biz / Sewing Machine Maintenance - Donna Worrell from Sew Biz in Radford will be discussing sewing machine maintenance, as well as any new and interesting developments in the shop. *

June 3 Annual Picnic. This will be in lieu of our regular monthly meeting. The annual picnic will feature a Silent Auction and Flower Pounding Activity.

July 1 Round Robin - TQP members will do rotating 15 minute demonstrations of different quilting techniques. Presenters and specific quilting techniques are as follows:

Christina T. - Cutting Board Basics
Ashley B. - Creating a background of diamonds from a strip set
Nancy H. - Variations and methods for making log cabin blocks
Joselin L. - making pattern weights.

August 5 There will be no meeting due to renovations at the Blacksburg Community Center.

August 9 Paula G. has organized a trip to the Virginia Quilt Museum for a private tour of their new facility at Silver Lake Mill in Dayton, Virginia. In addition to the tour, the group will also stop at a Mennonite General Store, have a bag lunch outside the VQM, and visit Patchwork Plus and the Quiltery fabric shops.

September 2 Annual Treasure Sale

October 7 Quilt Block Transformation Techniques - Ruth R. and Oma M. will each present a half program on transforming quilt blocks.

November 11*** Joselin L. will do a program on visible mending and other mending trends. This meeting will take the place of our usual second Tuesday of the month meeting in order to accommodate Election Day.

First Friday Food & Friends

This group meets on the first friday of every month at 11:45. The location alternates monthly and information regarding this meeting is sent out through our listserve. Please contact Sandi C. at dscurd32@gmail.com for more information.

Retreats and Workshops

TQP annually hosts both a spring and fall retreat, as well as a spring and fall workshop.

Raw Edge Applique Workshop

July 12, 9-2:30 pm

This workshop works for anyone interested in learning applique! It’s perfect for the beginner, the experienced and anyone in between. At the end of the day, you get to take home TWO tea towels appliqued by you! Registration is required.

$35 for members, $45 for nonmembers

Bargello Workshop

October 18, 9am - 3 pm

Blacksburg Community Center

In this workshop, we will make a table runner, and you will learn how to assemble, cut and sew strips together to form the Bargello waves. Once you’re learned the technique you can tackle more detailed patterns with multiple waves or if you want to keep it simple, this table runner pattern is designed so that it can be repeated to make a quilt as large as you want. 15 registrations must be received to run this workshop.

$35 for members, $45 for nonmembers
